This is what happening in Hong Kong!!! “Freedom and democracy is what we ask for!” Never have Hong Kong people, in modern history, been so eager to fight for true democracy. It could all be dated back to 1997, when Hong Kong returned to Beijing and was no longer a democratic British colony. To recall, Beijing actually “promised” that she would respect the normal way of life of all Hong Kong residents, present her with high degree of autonomy, which will remain unchanged for fifty years. It has only been less than two decades since Hong Kong has returned to the fake and cruel hug of Beijing, and Beijing set brutal rules regarding “universal suffrage” for Hong Kong: that in 2017, the Chief Executive candidates would be first picked and screened by the People’s Republic of China, and will be passed accordingly down to HongKongers to vote for the final star. The outcry broke out right after the issue of such unreasonable rules. Students called for class boycott, while some respectable professionals in society, including law professors, like Mr. Benny Tai, stood out and enlisted support for a social movement called “Occupy Central” in Hong Kong. Both aimed at striving for true democracy, universal suffrage, as well as genuine public nomination. The basic and mere need of HKers, was to fight for the right to elect a leader who is respected and honored by all its people, but not one that is internally picked by the PRC. Hong Kong residents are furious and indignant because Beijing broke its promise unconditionally, by destroying HKers’ way of lives, and depriving them of the high autonomy they craved for and have long enjoyed. Meanwhile, opposing “Occupy Central” was a group called “anti-Occupy Central”. Though having the same urge for universal suffrage, this group of people are terribly fearful of the socio-economic detriments that could be brought by “Occupy Central”: undermining of Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity. They couldn’t just turn a deaf ear or a blind eye, if shops in the affected zones are closed, bank transactions be interrupted, so on and so forth. The Umbrella Revolution has taken place for about a week. Effects have been clearly observed. The movement did have certain detrimental effects on traffic, on transactions, on trade, on social lives of residents. However, the voice of demonstrators seems unheard, still, by both Beijing and the local government. CY Leung, the current Chief Executive of Hong Kong, was being highly praised by the PRC, for “cooperating well with the Central Government and giving clear instructions to HK people”. The PRC also reassured that it would not step down or change its mind on the arrangement on election previously announced. Even worse, was that Beijing portrayed the protest by angry HKers as “a peaceful and blissful way of how HKers celebrated the 65th birthday of the PRC.” [HOW NAÏVE AND BLIND IT COULD BE…… THE REST OF THE WORLD MIGHT HAVE LONG REALIZED…] A coin has two sides. While residents might have noticed some negative consequences brought by Occupy Central, people around the globe praised Hong Kong: for its peacefulness, for its politeness. If you have ever lingered around the protest zone, you will undoubtedly be able to observe that: students actually silently ask for democracy. Songs regarding freedom have been sung; banners have been designed. Demonstrators behaved. They neither fight nor quarrel. They even pack trash that they have created. They are just, merely, quietly asking for universal suffrage after all. Chaos occurred, when anti-Occupy Central protestors appeared today in MongKok, and started tearing down the tents set up by students who demonstrated in related areas. Violence was used, and numerous people were physically hurt. Anti-Occupy Central protestors claimed that Occupy Central protestors were seriously badly affecting the social lives of residents around, and businesses of shops nearby. The fight between the two parties continued for the whole day in a ceaseless manner. The tension grew when…… Rumours were spread regarding anti-Occupy Central protestors (or… shall they be called “the violent group”), that they were actually sent by the Hong Kong Government to stop the Occupy Central as soon as possible, for even the Hong Kong Police Force couldn’t control the chaotic situation. This made the current situation more and more controversial. Let there be no people be condemned here other than the Hong Kong Government, which refused to shelter its people from the wield of power by the PRC. Regardless the roles as Occupy Central protestors, anti-Occupy Central protestors, students joining class boycott, or the Hong Kong Police Force, we are ALL living in the same city. Though values and actions may differ, we actually all have the same goal: that is to live harmoniously and freely under the shield by our dear government. Shall there be injuries, casualties, or even loss of our beloved ones, no one should be solely responsible, but the Hong Kong Government. We all hope to rebuild social order in our lively and vibrant home, with love, and with the help from different sectors. But which agent is distorting our good intentions? --THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT-- HW Oct 4 2014
