This is what happens when a large percentage of a country remains illiterate, and as a result critical thinking is stymied. The people in control are free to set up a theocratic form of government, and the people under their control are not intellectually able to logically challenge prevailing doctrines. This can happen and has happened historically with Christianity as well. So its not really a matter of religion, its a matter of people being educated enough to resists extremist laws that restrict peoples freedom of religion and marriage choices.
