This is why my faith calls me to act for change to our justice system. Most people are not damaged beyond repair. They want to be heroes in their own life story. If we give them the tools and the chance, most people will try to do better. Here in the US, we fail this basic test of civilization and human decency, punishing people for long periods of time and being made afraid of them so that corporations can soak up tax dollars to keep our fellow human beings locked away.
