This is why you wont see us adding load to primitive patterns, but rather seek to add complexity through harder movements. So Ive been seeing videos of people doing loaded crawls. Is it a good idea? Maybe, for some, but in ALL the cases Ive seen it clearly isnt. Why not? Because once load has been added the pattern has been lost. Crawling is a simultaneous cross-body pattern, the same as walking. Just like we dont allow people to use a load that is too much for their ability to move correctly in any other exercise we shouldnt allow it in crawling. Further, if you move poorly with such an important pattern, one that literally all of your gait patterns are built from, you are going to cause some bad changes higher upstream in more advanced patterns such as running. Heres how to test if you need to add load, or if the load you have is appropriate. If you cannot lift the opposite hand and foot simultaneously and place them on the ground at the same time, keeping your spine neutral while doing so, you have too much load and/ or the pattern itself isnt well enough ingrained. In either case return to basics and learn to crawl properly. Small, slow steps are where to start. The bottom line for many is this - we crawl to teach and develop neural pathways. You strengthen those pathways through repeated correct movement, not by adding load. Moving poorly and crawling with a staggered hand, foot, hand, foot pattern rather than hand and foot, hand and foot pattern done on a diagonal is going to make things worse for you, not better, no matter how much load you use. Even worse, the more times you perform the movement incorrectly youre making things worse for yourself. I would rather see people move with more skill and complexity before worrying about adding load, and have to say that if youre looking for ways to make crawling more complex you need to check out Idos work. In the meantime, nail down the basics much better before worrying about adding load. Crawling is probably the second last movement in the world that you need to worry about quantitative training (how many sets or reps, or how much load) with the last movement youd try to add load to being breathing.
