A Miracle at Rainbow Bridge There comes a time when everybody dies.nWorse still is when it happens to the young, when death takes their life so cruelly and abruptly. At twelve and a half years old, the terrible news and the circumstances surrounding his death were tragic. No-one could have known about his illness, he had hid it so well. Naturally his mother is devastated, inconsolable and missing him desperately. She hopes he will come running from his hiding place and say “Here I am, mum! I’m here. I’ll never leave you.” She is guilty. Why hadn’t she seen it earlier? Her grief is understandable. But now, through her grief, she dreams about the day when she is reunited with her beloved little buddy. She believes he has found a new home where all good pets go to the Rainbow Bridge, a heaven for cats, dogs, birds and other animals. This is very comforting and she imagines what he is doing and wonders if he is happy. Was he missing her as much as she missed him? She sees him chasing butterflies, stalking lizards and birds. Now and then he looks around, listens then carries on with his game. She imagines the conversations she would have with him if she were there too and slowly her mind slowly wanders. When he sees her coming, he ceases what he is doing immediately and bounds up to her, rather surprised that she has joined him so soon. It wasn’t her time yet, surely, he wonders. He leaps into her arms and nestled close to her, purring loudly. “Hello, Toby, I’ve really missed you.” “Mum, it’s so good to see you.” It was obvious that he was free from pain now and his kidneys were functioning just fine. That was the amazing miracle at Rainbow Bridge. Once an animal joined this beautiful place, all the pain they ever suffered, all the bad things ceased. Never at Rainbow Bridge did an animal suffer ever again. This was a place of freedom and fun. “Are you happy here, Toby?” He hesitated and looked away momentarily. He looked back up at her with sad eyes and sighed. “It is quiet and tranquil,” he said, “and we have a lot of fun and we’re looked after so well by the angels, but it can get lonely sometimes. I’d rather be at home with you.” “Yes, I know,” she said, “it is ever so lonely at home now without you.” “Don’t be too sad though, you still have the budgies and Kimberly to look after.” “You’ve left an empty space in my heart,” she said, “another cat won’t ever take your place, but I am afraid of loving another kitten, Toby, as much as I loved you.” “You’ll find it in your heart to love him. I know you will love him differently and he will be the luckiest kitten ever to have you as his mum.” “I’m so sorry I couldn’t help you get well. I wished I could have done something for you and saved you.” “I was afraid,” Toby said. “I just couldn’t let you see it because I knew how sad you would be losing me, but you gave me a gift that not many animals have in their life. You gave me a home, you loved me unconditionally and I returned that love with gratitude and without conditions. It was just my time to leave; but I appreciated what you did for me ending the pain and suffering I was in. I am free of all that now.” “I just wish I could take you home with me now,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “I loved you then, I still love you and I miss you desperately.” “And I love you, mum,” Toby said, “always remember that. I miss you a lot.” “You’re my best friend, Toby. I loved you more than I love people. I will never forget you.” “I know,” Toby said, “and you’re my best friend and I will never forget you. I will always be watching you from up here and keeping my eye on you and the gang. Keep an eye on Kimberly too and watch that she doesn’t take over, will you? “Thank you, Toby, thank you,” she said, in a gentle whisper. “I must go now,” Toby said. “Take care, mum and remember what I said.” She nodded and after one final hug, he gave her a last sweet kiss and she let him go. She watched him run off and over the bridge and into the rainbow valley. He looked back once or twice and she watched until she could no longer see him. It was not her time to go just yet, but the reality of the situation had long set in. She had accepted he was gone, but she would never forget the good things they shared. They were always going to be best buddies, even if they were a world apart. She knew in her heart that what Toby had given her in life, she had returned just as gratefully. This was a love that could never end. She would think of him every day and remember the good times they had together and she began to imagine once more what it would really be like when they were reunited for good, they would meet again and cross the bridge together for their final destination.
