This jaunty tune is one of the most tragically fated hits in popular music history. It reached No. 17 in the US and No. 33 in the UK in 1967. Shortly afterwards, in December the same year, four of the six band members were killed in the same plane crash that cost the life of Otis Redding. The sole survivors rebuilt the band, and one of them (who was not in the fated plane), a James Alexander, still nominally fronts it today at the age of 66 (he was only 19 when most of his bandmates perished).
