REGISTRATION OF APC AS POLITICAL PARTY BY INEC-A VICTORY FOR NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY I called the Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC Abuja today’s afternoon to commend them on their courage to pronounce All Progressive Congress party-APC as registered political party; after long awaited period of time. The delay was as a result of the great pressure mounted on the agency by the powers that be in Nigeria and enemies of democracy through a tele-guided means not to recognized APC as a political party. The bold step taken by the INEC Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega is a victory for our democracy and an act worthy of commendation. It is disheartening and disgusting that in this 21st century countries in Middle East are embracing proper democracy-viewing destructive and armed oppositions as cardinal dimension of a democratic process; calmed and peaceful oppositions who only rely on constructive criticisms and peaceful protest in calling the government to order are viewed as enemies in Nigeria. Whereas, those who have the audacity to speak up in defense of a nation’s constitution and in defense of freedom; are known as patriots not enemies. I would want us to honestly reflect on these questions: 1. Is it possible for an opposition party to dominate the polity when a sitting government is very sure of delivering dividends of democracy to the people? 2.Why must a government that claims it has done so much for the people be indulging it self in an evil act of witch hunting political opponents, without waiting for the people it has done so much for to decide who governs them? 3. If a government has done pretty well, what’s the rational behind fighting any one who indicates interest in the same position to willingly serve the public. However, I’m really glad that ordinary people across the states in Nigeria now believe that divisions could be bridged even when their leaders did not. They believe that walls can come down for peace and justice to prevail. I’m glad that enough people have decided to ignore the voices those who told them that it is impossible for our electoral system and systems in the states to tolerate positive changes. I’m glad that Nigerians have looked away in disillusionment and frustration, and now aware of the cynics, and the lobbyists and the special interests that have turned our government into a game only they can afford to play. They write the checks and you get stuck with the bills, they have access, while you get to write a letter for access, they think they own the government, but it is time to take it back. The time for that politics is over. It’s time to turn the page. I therefore, enjoin all Abians and Nigerians; through 2015 electoral boxes, let’s be the generation that ends poverty in Nigeria. Let’s be the generation that finally tackles our health care crisis. We can simply control costs by focusing on prevention. Let’s be the generation that finally frees Nigeria from the tyranny of oil. Let’s be the generation that tackles Nigeria’s climate change that has turned our rainy season into fall season that’s more dangerous than winter. That’s why this clarion call can’t be only be about an individual. It must be about us-it must be about what we can do together. 2015 electioneering campaign must be the occasion, the vehicle of our hopes and dreams. It will take your time, energy and your advice. It has to be about reclaiming the meaning of citizenship, restoring our sense of common purpose, and realizing that few obstacles can withstand the power of millions of voices calling for change. Therefore, if you will join us in this improbable quest, if you feel destiny calling, and see as we see, a future of endless possibility stretching before us, if you sense as we sense that the time is now to shake off our slumber and slough off our fear, and make good on the debt we owe past and future generation.
