This juvenile Big Brown Bat was found emaciated and dehydrated laying on the ground. After rehydration, food was introduced. Seen here the bat is having a meal of mealworms to gain proper nutrition and strength for release. Most bats found in Indiana are insectivores, which mean they only eat insects. They hunt for their prey while flying using echolocation. A single bat can eat up to 1000 insects in one hour. Bat populations are in great decline all over the United States due to White-Nose Syndrome which is a fungus that is harmful to the bats. The Indiana Bat is an endangered species, due to roosting site disturbance and White-Nose Syndrome. More than half of their population roosts in only a few caves in Southern Indiana.
