This keeps popping up in my feed. Im not sure how this is news, except maybe to non-Catholics or people who dont know what a Jesuit is. Catholics have believed this stuff for a long time. I went to Catholic school for 12 years and we were taught about evolution and the Big Bang Theory. To be sure, the Catholic Church has many issues and things wrong with it, but they are NOT the same as Christian fundamentalists. Even though Im a lapsed Catholic, I still get a little irked when theyre lumped in with Ken Ham type nut-bags. I dont think Ive ever met a Catholic that took the story of Genesis literally, although I concede they might exist. You might be surprised to find that many Catholic theologians are well-read, particularly in Classical Philosophy. Hell, Thomas Aquinas whole Apologetics is basically plagiarized Aristotle with God thrown in. But, I digress... As an aside, even though Im not religious, Ive never had a problem with reconciling natural evolutionary processes with the concept of a creator. Evolution is actually an essential component to creation. Any artist understands this. No product of artistic creation comes out fully formed. An artist will do tons of sketches, studies, revisions, etc. before arriving at the final piece (and even then, may make revisions). Im sure the same is true for musicians, poets, architects, and authors. Even going through the history of Western Art, one sees an evolutionary program running from the Ancient Egyptians through Greece to Rome into the Middle Ages back up through the Renaissance into the Baroque, etc. If humans artistic (and scientific) production is an evolutionary process and we are supposedly created in the image and *likeness* of the creator it stands to reason that Gods creative process would mirror our own.
