This letter really struck a cord with me, as, after a similar amount of time teaching in the classroom, I have also decided that I simply cannot do it anymore in the way in which we are expected to. The final few paragraphs of this letter could have been written by me and are the reason that Ive decided to leave behind the classroom for the Forest and the Beach...in these places levels have no meaning, children are intrigued, inspired and challenged in a natural setting, they are relaxed and grow as individuals, developing self esteem and confidence which then in turn naturally supports their development of reading, writing and number skills...and perhaps, most importantly of all, they learn to take risks, be creative and push the boundaries of their thinking. I feel that a radical change needs to take place regarding primary education and soon...what a shame that Lucy, yet another dedicated teacher has felt the need to walk away from a profession she clearly once loved.
