If you have a companion animal that for some insane reason, you can not keep... YOU OWE IT TO THAT ANIMAL to do everything you can to secure a safe, loving home for it. Always do a home visit (take someone with you, ideally) AND let someone know exactly where you are going, the address, and set it up with them to call when you arrive and call them again after 15 minutes, or have them call you; then call them once you are back in your car. THIS is for YOUR safety, in case the potential adopters are NOT as they want you to think they are! Ask for references, including the name, phone number AND address for the Vet they have used in the past, or plan to use for your animal... AND CHECK ALL REFERENCES! IS there a practicing Vet at that address? Who answers the phone and HOW do they answer it at 0800 (if they are not open yet, there should be an outgoing message or a service saying what time they open and who you should call if it is an emergency). It really is painfully common for dog fighters to send their wife or girlfriend to come get your dog, puppy, cat, kitten. Especially if she looks and dresses like an average sort of gal. Sometimes, theyll even include a little one, age two to ten, to appear to be the average, happy family sort of deal. Not everyone on Craigslist is a bad person, far from it, but when you offer a cheap or free animal... it attracts evil people from ANYWHERE who will cause your once beloved animal.... harm. LR
