This little rant was inspired by a post made by my friend, Sandra Synar... (I hope youre still my friend, Sandra! ;-) ) I used to be on the fence about eating meat, but after many years of researching and soul searching, I feel that Life is Life. Plants are alive and sentient (this has been well documented -- water, too), even if not the way we traditionally think of it. It is the Energy of the Sun that we need to survive, which is why eating plants sustains Life. Animals also eat plants, which is why we get the Suns Energy from them as well. A very good friend of mine has the gift of being able to communicate with plants and trees and he told me that he once asked a plant (it was a carrot, if memory serves) how it felt about being consumed by humans. The answer was amazing: it expressed to him that that is their purpose, to give their Life force to others; that it made plants happy to fulfill this purpose. Now, if you can eat a carrot, knowing that it can think to this degree, how is that different from eating, at least, fish or foul? I do not eat any mammals, because I believe they are too similar to us, physiologically and in a spiritually evolved sense, but I truly believe that we need to eat meat -- not as much as most people do, mind you -- to get the nutrients we require. Plants simply cannot provide, for example, enough protein or B vitamins, etc., and even with supplementation, unless it is from an animal source (and then, whats the point?!), is not adequate. If you look at all the research and stats, vegetarians (vegans, esp.) usually get quite sick, from these deficiencies, eventually. I was veggie for a little while, many years ago and found I just didnt feel well enough, like I did before, so now I have found a compromise. And before anyone suggests tofu/soy -- ugh, no! It is SO harmful to the body... Not wanting to offend, of course - you are all welcome to make your own personal choices, of course, but this is the reasoning behind my personal choice. I also believe that if we are truly Conscious about how we eat meat, it makes a big difference. I love the Native tradition of giving thanks to the animal and honouring its spirit. If I lose my sense of gratitude, Im just like the majority of people who consume way too much meat, without ever giving it a second thought...
