This makes a good point the politicians should be working to get taxes from groups that cheat and lie about what and who they are. Bill Mackinac Center’s advocacy should be investigated So the Michigan Senate will now do the bidding of the Mackinac Center (“Senate to study teachers union tactic,” LSJ, Nov. 11). The Mackinac Center has already filed suit against the Michigan Education Association on behalf of eight teachers who refuse to pay union dues. On its website, the Mackinac Center proclaims itself a “nonpartisan” research institute, bragging of its tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. By filing suit against the MEA, the Mackinac Center has again entered into advocacy, not just research. It has already advanced right-to- work and financial manager legislation and the privatizing of K-12 education. Its funding comes from corporate advocates, like the DeVos Foundation, the Koch Charitable Foundation and Exxon Mobil. Meanwhile, the Mackinac Center’s partisan research has been described by Source-watch as low quality, ignoring evidence that does not meet its agenda. As a pensioner who must now pay state income tax, I resent the Mackinac Center’s masquerade as a nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization. That masquerade is what the Senate should really investigate.
