This may not seem to be Star Trek related at first, but bear with me, Ill get to the relationship shortly. When I was doing work for my masters degree we were required for one class to watch a video lecture delivered by one Dr. Randy Pausch, entitled, The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. Dr. Pausch was a professor of computer science at the Carnagie-Mellon University. He was also one of the trailblazers of human-computer interaction. The lecture was surprisingly upbeat considering that the man was dying of pancreatic cancer. During the first deliveries of the lecture Dr. Pausch stated that it was one of his childhood dreams to appear in Star Trek. JJ Abrams heard of that and gave him a SPEAKING cameo in his 2009 film Star Trek. This in itself was remarkable in that just a few years earlier the Screen Actors Guild wouldnt permit the same thing to HRH Prince (now King) Abdullah II on Voyager because he wasnt a union member. Later deliveries of the lecture referenced that Dr. Pausch had indeed achieved that particular life goal/dream - he had appeared on Star Trek, but sadly, by the time the movie was released, Dr. Pausch was dead. (Another actress delivered her last lines for that film, and, like Dr. Pausch, was already dead before it was released. You may know her name - Majel Leigh Hudek Barrett Roddenberry (she died on the very same day that I had to bury my late older brother, who had died a few days previously - the film is associated with death for me)). Dr. Randy Pausch was born this day in 1960. He died at the age of 47. Ive included links to Dr. Pauschs cameo and to his Last Lecture. I think youll like viewing it. YouTube/watch?v=pqFyY5f8Zmw.
