This message is from Ellen Pinnes for The Disability Coalition and the PLAN project at Disability Rights New Mexico. Two major changes are coming to New Mexico’s Medicaid program on January 1, 2014: The new Centennial Care program will start, and tens of thousands of New Mexicans – including many people with disabilities – will become eligible for Medicaid coverage for the first time as a result of the expansion called for by the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”). That expansion will make most people with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level (FPL) eligible for Medicaid. That’s about $15,800 for one person and $32,500 for a family of four. A lot will be happening this fall as we move toward those changes that will happen in January. Newly eligible people can start signing up beginning October 1 for Medicaid coverage that will start on January 1. Also, beginning in October and continuing through late November, people who are currently covered by Medicaid will be asked to choose which of the four Centennial Care managed care organizations (MCOs) they will enroll in. To help educate people about the upcoming changes, the Human Services Department is holding dozens of public meetings around the state. A list of the events, including dates and locations, is attached for your information. You can also find this information on the HSD website at centennialcare.net/, or you can call 1-888-997-2583 for information.
