This might be too amusing for this group so Im sorry if I inadvertently entertain anyone. It is a family story though and Im starting off with a long winded pre-amble (I hope to be a grandfather some day) so I hope that mitigates any entertainment value. Anyways.....Im not sure how familiar some of you are with the rich tapestry that is Canadian culture. Well except for the part of Canada that is Quebec. None of us are really sure what the hell is going on there. But for the rest of us its sort of a custom to use an ie to end every name. So if your Christian name is Steven you become Stevie, If its Johnathon you become Johnie and so on and such-forth. Now my Moms ,for reasons I dont know always hated this. Her Father Arthur became Artie, Her Moms Rosemary became Rosie. Her brothers Walter and Gordon became Wally and Gordie. She married a drunken sot named Fredrick who of course went by Freddie. When my sister was born she named her Kimberly, which of course is quite a lovely name. Naturally that became Kimmy. So when my turn came she decided to game the system. Cant shorten Paul can you? Nope. Ya can still add a friken IE to the end of it though cant you? So I got Paulie. Huzzah. What I failed to mention was my sister and I had an older brother and this is where it becomes maddening. She named him Murray. The name comes with a built in IE sound. The perfect Canadian name. She had gamed the system without even knowing it! Naturally everyone called him Mur.
