This month, we saw just how far the right-wing GOP was willing to go to enact its radical agenda -- shutting down the government and threatening a default on our debt. We cant afford any more radical Republicans in the Senate. Instead, we need strong Democratic leaders like Senator Jeff Merkley -- a hero for banking reform, consumer protection, womens healthcare, and strong congressional oversight of the intelligence community. But hes up for re-election in 2014, and we cant risk losing his voice in the Senate. Senator Merkleys last race in 2008 came down to the wire, and this one could be even tougher. Republicans are already lining up to challenge him in Oregon, and you can be sure that plenty of far-right backers will be lining up to support them. Karl Rove has even said that Oregon might be next on his hit list. Thats why its important to show that Senator Merkley has our support at this early stage in the race. Hes set an ambitious $50,000 goal for midnight tonight and needs your help now. Will you rush $5 to his campaign now, and give him the support he needs to stand up to his far-right opponents? Senator Merkley is a staunch ally of mine in calling for increased transparency and accountability from our nations intelligence programs. Weve fought to declassify Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court opinions, and just this morning he joined me as an original cosponsor of the USA FREEDOM Act to end the dragnet collection of phone data and increase oversight of our intelligence programs. Im proud to have him by my side in this important fight. Senator Merkley has been a champion for many other progressive issues in Congress. He led the effort to end high-risk speculation at banks. He pushed for increased regulation on predatory payday lenders. And he fought to end funding for the so-called Monsanto Protection Act, which barred federal courts from ever halting the sale of GMO seeds. The New Republic calls Senator Merkley a liberal lion for a reason. We need that kind of leadership in the Senate, now more than ever. The fact is, Oregon is a relatively cheap state for Karl Rove, the Koch Brothers, and their ilk to try and sneak in and steal a Senate seat. We need to make sure Jeff Merkley has the resources he needs to make sure they dont. Your help now, before the midnight deadline, is crucial.
