This morning 9-27-13 at 10AM I stopped for breakfast at Ihop on Grant road an I-10. Standing in line to pay my bill I overheard the man standing in front of me is wanting to break a $100 bill, he is asking for two $50. Or five $20. While he is waiting for the cashier to finish what she is doing he turns around and starts telling me how he is here feeding his kids. “You know you gotta put good food in them” he tells me. I smiled and agreed with him. The cashier finishes her previous transaction and takes the $100. Bill for the man. I watch her hand him 5 $20’s, he then proceeds to put the money in his pocket and quickly change the subject to how good the food is at this Ihop. As soon as he finished his sentence he pulls a stack of $5’s out of his pocket and proceeds to count it as if he is double checking his change the cashier just gave him. He tells her there is a mistake that she only gave him $25 in $5’s (five $5’s) You could instantly see how uncomfortable and confused the young cashier was. Trying to be polite and not offend anyone (just in case there was an error I did not see) I stepped in and asked the cashier what was going on. I asked if he was making change for a large bill and is now saying that you gave him the incorrect amount. She said yes. At this point I knew exactly what was happening. My adrenalin started pumping and I instantly switched from Nick Hood to Dick Hood. I told the cashier that this guy is trying to scam you and not to give him anymore money until the manager was there and they recounted her drawer. First thing out of this dudes mouth was “ I’m not trying to scam her I’m a Christian”. I told him that don’t mean shit to me. I know what you’re doing, I have seen this scam before and I’m not going to let it happen! Trying my best not to push this into a physical confrontation but still do what’s right I called over another server to stand with the young lady while I went for the manager. She ended giving him the balance of his change which was another $50.00. He then turns around pats me on my shoulder and strolls out $50.00 Richer. By time the manager was there, this dude was GONE. What about his kids? There was none. He drives a tanish/glodish smaller Toyota car. Didn’t get his plate number. He is a taller Black man 6’2”- 6’5”, faded tattoo on right side of his neck, think it said love, baled, wearing black short and shirt with a pair of converse on that said “Good Year” along the soles. He is very clean looking, fast talking, you would never think you were being hustled unless you knew what was happening. I know it’s a long shot that anyone reading this is going to bump into him but it is a small world and stranger things have happened. I’m glad I attended the school of hard knocks, it has taught me so much more than the average Joe could ever know.. Looking back I wish I would have done more to prevent this from happening. The only thing that held me back was knowing no one was in danger and not knowing if he was armed or not. Could have been a totally different outcome.
