This morning, I got up at half past three, with a song swirling in my head - Yeh bandhan toh pyar ka bandhan hai; Janmon ka sangam hai....Since I often receive guidance through songs, especially when they appear in my head out of the blue, I paid attention to its energy....which like all energies carried a duality within. At one level, it felt very beautiful for this is the kind of relationship I share with my dear husband....and am very grateful for it. But at another level, I was drawn to the word bandhan.....which led me to Vivaah-Bandhan, Prem-Bandhan, and Raksha-Bandhan.....Why are these relationships called a bandhan, I wondered? What kind of bandhan is it? As I mulled over these questions, the answers flowed..... This is a sacred bandhan, tied delicately through vows taken in the presence of five elements, ancestors, and gods. Problems occur when we forget to pay attention to, understand or renew these vows. A bandhan implies maryada or boundaries or lakshman-rekha. If that is violated, the relationship loses its sanctity. This answer made me think of the ways in which we violate our sacred bandhans - and how easy it has become to violate them! Social media - where people are available at the click of a button, social interactions where substances are imbibed to lose inhibitions, work-places - with an easy accessibility of shoulders to lean upon etc. etc. etc. are places where the maryada of sacredness is easily violated. Just the other day, someone was telling me how bahu-betis of Rajasthan, who otherwise don demure clothing and cover their heads in front of their elders, go abroad on holidays, wear all kind of skimpy clothes, click photographs and post them on social media, to be liked, appreciated, and commented upon by the very same social circle back home. I guess, the time has come for each one of us to examine our actions, and the motive/ intention behind them, so that we can make amends and our relationships become pyar ka bandhan once again.....Insha Allah!
