This morning I had a long talk with my little Mimi because shes getting an allergy test after school. Like most children shes afraid of needles. MIMI: Mommy, how big is the needle? Is it going to hurt? ME: Im not sure how big it is, but Ill be honest in saying it will hurt. Theyll put the needle in your vein in your arm, itll sting and then theyll fill two vials with your blood. MIMI: (shaking her head and frowning) ME: Its going to hurt but the pain is temporary. Whenever youre afraid you always have to think of why youre going through the pain. Youre getting your allergy test so we can make sure youre eating the right things. Dont let the fear monsters make you scared! MIMI: But Im afraid!! ME: When I had you they stuck all kinds of needles in me but I knew it was worth it, because Id get to have you to love! MIMI: Awww thanks for sticking yourself with needles for me. ME: You were worth the pain! I will take a hundred shots for you any day. P.S. I eventually bribed her with the promise of Menchies after her allergy test. After our talk I realized that I was essentially talking about the way we all deal with our personal fears. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, my personal favorite: fear of success! Yes, sometimes facing the ugly truth is difficult and at the time it seems easier to ignore the realities of life. But if we can muster up the courage to face them and accept the temporary pain, we will begin to live the life of our dreams! Go get your shots!
