This morning I had the great honor of accompanying Gen. Hulusi Akar, commander, Turkish Land Forces, and Gen. Ray Odierno, 38th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery. The tomb is sacred ground for us and for Gen. Akar to take time out of his busy schedule to honor our fallen is greatly appreciated. The Republic of Turkey is an important ally for both the U.S. and NATO. Their friendship is essential as we battle terrorism around the globe. Prior to the wreath laying ceremony Gen. Akar was presented with the Legion of Merit by Gen. Odierno at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall, for his work modernizing the Turkish Army to meet the challenges of modern warfare
