This morning I had the pleasure of working with forty some incarcerated individuals inside a federal corrections institution outside of Phoenix, AZ. We laughed. We wrote. We discussed. We reflected. We shared. We listened. We remembered. We grew. We honored one and other, with respect, with love, with dignity. This is day one of a six day long residency. Im so excited to watch this thing evolve. Cyphers on deck. A performance in the yard scheduled. A little Baca, A Little Mos Def, A Little Ryan Falkner, A Little Pac, A Little Jeanan Verlee. Plenty of words. A ton of heart. This program is put on by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Rec Officer gave me several encouraging nods and told me he was very impressed with the class. He even welcomed me to return in the new fiscal year with the hope of continuing to teach for a series of years—an invitation I intend to make good on.
