This morning I was approached by an older woman seeking my assistance in getting another job. In anguish and in tears, she gave me the rundown of the inhospitable and inhumane conditions under which she worked in her present position with an imported Indian family. She showed me her hands and the condition of her nails brought me on the verge of tears. The Indian woman who employed her refused her use of the washing machine available and instead wanted her to hand wash all the clothes that awaited her on Monday! She was accused of stealing and the Indian woman proceeded to search her bag and persons each day; she couldnt go to the bathroom by herself - either the husband or wife and even the children followed her, denying her of privacy. And her working hours changed at the will of her employer - she would leave her home outside Castries on morning only to be told by the Indian woman that she has to come back and 2pm and she would be paid for the half day. There is a litany of other violations....too numerous to mention! This is St. Lucia NOT India. There is no caste system here. We are not slaves. That is when I suggested she go to the Labour Department and she retorted with her lack of trust/faith that the Labour Department would be of no assistance....
