This morning Im thinking about Grandpa, the greatest man I ever knew, always wanted to write a book about him & his life just never had the skill. Grandpa was born in 1908 in Koleen, Indiana in a log cabin, his father was a coal miner in Linton, he went to school in a one room schoolhouse his mother baked biscuits every morning giving them to the children to keep their hands warm on the way to school where they would eat them, always liked that story, he quit school in the 8th grade and went with his brother who was attending Purdue to go to work and help with expenses they would hop the train to come home for holidays when his brother graduated he came back and worked farms and odd jobs he owned a motorcycle with a sidecar at this time. He played baseball for the Ridgeport Bearcats and everyone I have ever talked to said he was a great baseball player when I was a boy and we would drive through Ridgeport he tell me about that ball he hit so far they were still looking for it He married Grandma and they moved to Chicago where he went to work at Rock Ola for $4 a week he work there for 43 years missing two days when his mother died and then a week later when his father died becoming a licensed engineer he even slept at the factory when his family was quarantined a great American man a great American story. No statue, no book, just a wonderful man who took care of his family, went to work, could fix anything, and was always there with patience and understanding.
