This morning, September 19, Statesville Police received a report regarding a scam in which a Statesville resident was scammed out of several thousand dollars. Please read this description of the scam and help us protect others from being robbed in the same manner. Always be wary of individuals that approach complete strangers in parking lots promising free money for their help. These suspects will usually target older victims that are alone. The victim reported that she was approached by a black female in the parking lot of Food Lion on Davie Ave. The female told the victim that she needed a ride to meet a family member. The female displayed some cash and a letter she said was from the insurance company regarding an injury settlement. The female went into Food Lion with the victim while she shopped. This female was described as being 5’5”, wearing a ball cap. The victim gave the female a ride to Home Depot on Turnersburg Hwy. A second black female was waiting in the parking lot when they arrived. This second female was described as being in her 50’s. The first suspect had talked about not being able to withdraw money from the bank due to her race. The second suspect said that was not true and she would prove it by going to Wells Fargo Bank and withdrawing money. The victim then drove the females to Wells Fargo bank on Turnersburg Hwy. The second suspect got out of the car and told the victim to drive over to McDonalds and wait for her. A short time later, the second suspect returned and displayed money that she claimed that she had just withdrawn. It is unknown if the suspect actually went into the bank. The suspects eventually persuaded the victim to prove that she was able to withdraw money from her own bank. Therefore the victim drove over to her bank, dropping the two suspects off about a block away. The victim withdrew several thousand dollars in cash. The victim then picked the two female suspects back up and returned to Home Depot. The females said that they were still looking for a family member. The victim said that the two females put all of the money they supposedly “withdrew” along with her money in a paper bag. The suspects told the victim that they put the bag in her trunk, for her to keep “all” of the money and they would contact her later about the rest of the money from the settlement. The suspects possibly promised a share of the alleged “settlement” for her assistance. When the victim returned home, she discovered that the bag was full of nothing but newspaper. The suspects got away with several thousand dollars from the elderly female victim in the confusion. A suspect vehicle was never seen, and no further description of the second female suspect was available at the time of this release. Anyone with information regarding this incident, please contact the Statesville Police Department at 704.878.3406, or Iredell Crime Stoppers at 704.662.1340. Callers can remain anonymous.
