This morning, Yvonne McCall and I attended the Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration at Mt. Joy Missionary Baptist Church in Edwardsville. As usual, it was inspirational and included some excellent music. The main speaker was educator Veronica Armouti, who described how minor, repetitive, low-level forms of discrimination can culminate in a feeling of hopelessness. There was an excellent solo singing performance by Justin Clay and several songs by the SIUE Gospel Choir. There were a few politicians on hand, including US Senator, John Shimkus, and Rep. Dwight Kay, who is one of the people I lobby. The event ended with everyone singing the traditional song We Shall Overcome.
