This morning, the SCOTUS upheld Texass new voter ID law. For all of you who wonder why voter ID has become such a right wing touchstone, please understand this: The far right, the religious right and the conservative GOP are not interested in having everyone vote. Heres what I wrote in my book Wrapped in the Flag, In 1980, Paul Weyrich, a good friend of my parents, explained why he favored limiting the vote: I dont want everyone to vote. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up and the voting populace goes down. Weyrich may not be a household name, but he was the architect of much of the infrastructure of todays right wing. Think the Heritage Foundation. Think the Moral Majority, the movement that brought the evangelicals into the GOP. Think ALEC, responsible for many of the voter-suppression bill that recently came to life in state legislatures across the country. (Wrapped in the Flag, p. 129) Paul Weyrich derided what he called Goo Goo, the good government syndrome. Having a good government thats inclusive and responsive to the needs of the people goes against everything these right wingers want. They are in the business of dismantling our government -- limiting voting is one step in their plan.
