This move provides those who think education should be a public trust with a seam --- one that we should exploit to break wide open the neoliberal ideology that treats education as a commodity, and reason as serving merely instrumental ends. American college students are treated like trash, and yet they refuse to stand up for themselves. The Baby boomer generation and Generation X have laid a mighty heavy load on their backs. Students should seize the opportunity to advocate for their own interests and push the national dialogue beyond the gauntlet that Obama has thrown down. Given the obscene amount taxpayers hand over to arms manufacturers each year, students should not be timid in collectively demanding four-year degrees fully funded by the public. This is not a new idea under the sun.
