This mysterious species has not been seen since 1998. The New Caledonian owlet-nightjar(Aegotheles savesi) has almost become a ghost for birdwatchers and researchers. Only two specimens preserved in museums in Liverpool (UK) and Italy are known. The bird is endemic to the island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia. It is characterized by its great size and long legs. Critically endangered, it is unlikely that there are more than 50 live specimens.
