This new activity, dubbed “Nu-complexes,” is detectable even after an EEG has flat lined. This part of the brain is associated with higher functions, such as memory and learning. It may factor in to neuroprotection for patients who are in a therapeutic, or medically-induced, coma. However, this is no reason to doubt a doctor who has previously declared brain death. The activity monitored does not correlate with regions of the brain connected with survival. While Nu-complexes may one day fit into the equation of determining brain death, its discovery does not negate everything that is presently known about brain function. More info: bit.ly/1gEeyuN
