This news piece about the Tour de France and possible damage from spectators to dry stone walls has generated quite a bit of debate! Here in the Yorkshire Dales the drystone walls are a part of the historic cultural landscape, some dating back many hundreds of years, and many are in good repair especially the roadside walls which spectators may be close to. Other walls have been replaced by fences which are cheaper to maintain. Lets hope the Tour de France is an opportunity to raise awareness of the amazing landscapes, wildlife and communities of the Yorkshire Dales and help protect this special area for the future!
