This one has some history. The frame is an old Proteus 531 frameset from the 70s. Beautiful lugwork,Campy dropouts, unique fast-back stays, etc. I intended to use it as a single exclusively, so out came the hacksaw and off went the rear hanger. I assembled it with some bits I had from other projects: A Campy NR Pista crankset (175 arms), 42t Sugino drilled chainring, re-spaced Specialized hubs laced to Mavic MA40 rims, 17 tooth cog in back, Michelin HiLite Cross tires, A black-chrome Tange Levin headset, NR seatpin, Black 1st Generation Dura- Ace front caliper, an Avocet touring I saddle, and some Scott AT2-LF bars that left the planet some time ago. Rode it hard for years - mostly on a local rail-trail - and had it with me the night of a full-moon ride where I met the woman who would later become my wife. (She needed a helmet, and I just happened to have a spare...who said you cant find love on a fixed gear?) That was 1993. Fast forward to today, and a fresh Joe Bell paint-job delivered this week. Most of the parts stayed with the bike, although I swapped the bars and stem for a set of Albatross/Nitto Dirt Drop from Rivendell. Still using PowerGrips, and I have a new pair on a set of MKS touring pedals. (Did I mention I have size 14 feet?) Some cork grips and SKS fenders complete this chapter. I especially love the photo from the front! Thanks to all for the continued inspiration. Marty mgierke@insightbb
