This one is going to be a big post, but this pisses me off and is definitely a WTF! There are lots of fuel pages and all kinds of people complaining about fuel costs but the actual FACTS are hard to find online. I went out and found the information for my self, and did the math, because I was tired of second hand info. So here is what I got. Take a look and see if it pisses you off as much as it did me. There is a PDF attached here that shows the BC taxes on our fuel. There are different taxes in different areas of BC. The top half shows the price in dollars per litre and percentages, depending on what is relevant. The bottom half shows what the rack price is when a fuel tanker picks up at the bulk depot at the manufacturer. You cant get those prices because you dont buy a tanker truck at a time but they can. There are also pump prices. Thats what we pay. If you subtract the rack price, plus taxes, from the pump price, what you get is the profit/shipping margin. That profit/shipping margin is what the fuel stations get to run their business on. Per litre its not much, but by the truck load its a good chunk of change. So, for Q town here... as of yesterday 4pm, any fuel sold at petro-canada stations was making 0.236265 dollars per litre. Thats NOT cents per litre. Thats not pure profit. Trucking cost has to be included to ship it from the nearest depot, and wages, operating expenses, insurance, etc. Realistically trucking is the really the only variable that changes from week to week with fuel cost. To run a brand spanking new tanker truck for a full day you are looking at an approximate cost of $2200.00, plus wage. If you gave a wage of $35.00 per hour for 12/day you tack on another $420.00 direct wage and another $210.00 in pension, benefits, etc. So a grand total of $2830.00 a day to get it to market. Thats about 8.58 cents per litre on a 33000 litre tank truck going up to 750 km/day. SOOOOO.... after all is said and done, 15.05 per litre goes into the pocket. If a station is using an entire truck load per day thats about $4966.00 per day.
