"This opening address is not a political report. The National - TopicsExpress

"This opening address is not a political report. The National Secretary will present the political report, which is about appraisal of the balance of class forces and our struggles for socialism in their historical context. The purpose of this opening address is twofold. (1) The first is to set the context of the current debates amongst us as the YCLers. (2) The second is to encourage all of us to engage in these debates robustly, but also in a manner that builds and unifies the YCL and SACP because at the end of the conference all of us will be expected to roll up our sleeves and fight against capitalism – at least this is one of the many things that unites us. In the next four days all of us gathered here, will be expected to debate and differ on our analysis of (a) our organizational performance since our last 2006 National Congress, (b) analysis of the current conjuncture and (c) on the best strategies and tactics as well as the leadership that must co-ordinate the implementation of an achievable, yet radical four year program of action that will emerge out of this conference. Our National Committee has prepared political and organisational reports, including discussion documents to enable us to robustly debate these issues. We have also invited speakers from our Party, the ANC and COSATU and the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) to give us their perspectives on the current phase of our revolution. Because the documents and the speakers are not perfect, we expect delegates to engage critically and fearlessly with both the speakers’ inputs and the congress discussion documents, yet in a respectful manner. We do not expect delegates to just be (a) jesters who are good at singing songs and praises for our leaders (b) demagogues who differ with a view because it has been stated by their opponents, without paying attention to the logic of their arguments. (c) Lastly we do not expect delegates to act like ideologues who mystify concrete reality." Chairman David Masondo
