This past Monday, 3 of our very own CFLP athletes were presented Merit Awards by the Evansville Police Department for their quick thinking and selfless service. Congratulations Mark Saltzman, Steven Toney, and Matt Hastings!!! Mark Saltzman – responded to an attempted suicide run where a despondent female had severely cut her own wrists, one of which was down to the bone. The officers were able to control her actions and calm her down. They applied a tourniquet and the bleeding was stopped. Prior to the officer’s arrival, no medical assistance had been called. In the opinion of their supervisor, had they not arrived and treated her injuries as quickly as they did, the female would have lost her life. Steven Toney – responded to a dispute run and upon arrival found that a male subject was bleeding heavily from two deep cuts to his left arm. Seeing the man’s injuries as life threatening, Officer Lowe and Hirshman applied a tourniquet to help stop the bleeding. That tourniquet application was not completely effective and Officer Toney then applied another tourniquet, which did stop the heavy flow of blood. Upon transport to the hospital, it was discovered that the male victim suffered a severed artery and he was able to recover after surgery. Matt Hastings – responded to a dispatch run that a female had cut her wrist. Officer Kleeman arrived and located the female sitting on the sidewalk with blood pouring from her right wrist. Officer Kleeman retrieved his combat action tourniquet and applied it to her arm. Officer Hastings was second to arrive and placed bandages on the wound as well. The female’s blood pressure was very low and she passed out on scene. The tourniquet stopped the bleeding and the female was able to recover after having surgery. Had the officers not acted in the manner they did, it is likely the female victim would have died on scene.
