This past week I have been told several times that, "Not everyone is cut out to be a salesman" or " I am not a salesman at all!" Let me get on my soap box for just a moment and let me tell you how I feel about those statements and how they are not true... All of us are selling all the time, whether we classify it as such or not. When we enter into a relationship or friendship, we are selling “ourselves” as a person to the other person with whom we are interacting. When we go to a movie with a friend or loved one, we “sell” them on the movie we’d like to see. And here is my favorite, RESTAURANTS!!!! Haven’t you ever raved about your favorite restaurant to get your friends or significant other to check it out with you (or maybe just so you could go back again!)? Have you ever asked for and gotten a raise? That was a sales job. Have you asked someone to marry you and they said yes? Already covered but, Sales job. Have you gotten your children to clean their room when they don’t want to? Sales! Sales is persuading people to take action with their understanding of it being their decision. So you really ARE a salesperson if you’ve ever done something like this. I think perhaps we have created a negative connotation around sales in our minds. Maybe it even feels a little “icky”. This could also be why we don’t identify with the role of “salesperson” However, I believe when we are truly passionate and inspired about something and really truly believe in it, it never feels like sales at all. It is genuine and from the heart. A very different feeling! I am now off my soap box…Thanks for reading!
