This past week, the Washington Post published a front page photo of a young guy lying on the grassy median of one of our major highways holding a sign that read, Will work for $75, 000 a year. Well, who wouldnt! I bring this up because my husband and I have been trying for two months to get contractors committed to doing some needed house repairs and landscaping to our property. Without boring you with too many details, the first guy who said hed do the home repairs never showed up, even after several phone calls from us. The second contractor has promised on four different occasions that he will bring over the contract for us to sign. As of today, he was supposed to be here at 1 PM and is still a no show at 4 PM. Is it five strikes and youre out? The landscaper had a better excuse for not returning my calls -- he and his wife just had a baby on Saturday. He has earnestly promised to come this Thursday to give us an estimate on the work to be done. Why do I not feel reassured? My point is this: in an economy that is in the loo, and 8.9% of Americans out of work, wouldnt you think people would want the jobs? Wouldnt you think they would be jumping for joy that we have two major projects to do, and that we pay our bills on time? Back in the late 1940s, when I was four or five years old, my parents fell on hard times. Jobs were still hard to come by and, though they were both college educated, my dad took a job as a janitor while my mom worked evenings at a drug store. Did they whine? No. They simply did what needed to be done to get us through this rough patch. Work for $75,000??? In your dreams, buddy. Whats the heck has happened to this country?
