This past weekend we went through Katies clothes. Up until then we had stored them at a rental storage facility. Another of Katies endearing qualities was her love of great looking clothes. A lot of clothes. Like 17 totes of clothes. She was famous for going into Goodwill to just look around and coming out with name brand jeans with tags on them for $5. It was one of her secret (well, not anymore since I just told you) super powers. She would even buy stuff for her sisters because she hated missing a great deal on something even if she couldnt wear it. We separated them into keep and not keep piles. The keep pile held those things that had special memories for us when Katie would wear them. Her Anberlin t-shirt was a keep. Her goofy animal looking hat was a keeper. Her Mayday Parade was a definite keep. Im surprised its still in one piece she wore it so much. Some of the clothes her sisters kept to wear on Katie Days...those days when the loss is overwhelming. When we want some tangible reminder of her love for us and our heartbreak in missing her. Her grey sweatshirt for Sarah. A brown sweater for Margaret. A sweat band for Anna. Perfume for Emily. As the not keeping pile continued to grow I began praying for the new owners that they would love this article of clothing and that somehow God would use it in their lives to communicate His great love for us. As much as I wanted to keep everything always, I couldnt. To do so would have violated my personal convictions about being a good steward of what God has entrusted to us. God trusted me with Katie for almost 23 years. God trusted me with her possessions after she was gone. Storing them in the attic or even worse, paying for a storage facility would not have been good stewardship. As hard as it was I knew not keeping them was exactly what Katie would have wanted. To be good stewards. Of our clothes & possessions, our time, our relationships, our lives. Lord, you are my first love. You will get my first fruits. You have my heart. Katies prayer journal 01/31/13
