This petition has been reopened: Petitioning Jenny Gray Jenny Gray, Chief Executive Officer, Zoos Victoria: Insist on rigorous investigation into the impacts of the East-West Link on the Melbourne Zoo. change.org/en-AU/petitions/jenny-gray-chief-executive-officer-zoos-victoria-insist-on-rigorous-investigation-into-the-impacts-of-the-east-west-link-on-the-melbourne-zoo We are writing to you as members and supporters of the zoo worried about the impacts of the proposed East-West Link on our beloved Melbourne Zoo. As families with young children, living in the inner city, the zoo provides us with a sanctuary from the stresses of the urban environment. When we are at the Zoo, we are able to feel as if we are not in the city at all. It is not just the roars and screeches. It is the almost total absence of urban noises, especially traffic. We are concerned construction of the East-West Link will forever change the experience of going to the Melbourne Zoo. Instead of seeing the trees and hearing the birds of Royal Park on arrival, we may soon see, hear and feel the traffic entering and exiting the Link’s western exit (‘surface connection’) only a few hundred metres away. We are concerned about: Noise and vibrations levels and how construction and traffic noise heard inside the zoo will change the visitor experience, and impact on the wellbeing of zoo animals. Air quality and whether concerns about traffic emissions will affect people’s desire to visit, and the health of zoo animals. Visual impacts and how thewestern ‘surface connection’ and associated off-ramps through Royal Park will change the experience of arriving at the zoo? Social and tourism effects such as how the zoo’s reputation will be diminished by being the only metropolitan zoo in Australia in such close proximity to a major highway? Given the lack of community engagement and public information available about the East-West Link from Linking Melbourne Authority, we are seeking your help to take our concerns to the Linking Melbourne Authority. We are asking you to insist on rigorous investigation into the impacts of the East-West Link on the Melbourne Zoo as part of the Comprehensive Impact Assessment. It is important that the assessment deal specifically with impacts to the Melbourne Zoo, on its reputation, visitors and animals. Finally, we fully support the direction the zoo has taken, as an institution that has become a significant and influential voice for wildlife and the environment. We share the zoo’s vision to be the word’s leading zoo-based conservation organization. We are asking Zoos Victoria join the public discussion around the East-West Link - on the Link’s impacts on urban wildlife and amenity, as well as the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting more sustainable transport options.
