This post has had 282 shares and 4,565 likes (at this time). Everywhere people are speaking about this phenomenon in glowing terms, spreading the word that this is okay to leave caches like this. IT IS NOT OKAY. No one should be leaving any kind of trace behind. Hikers are not exempt -- they are on the front lines of protecting the trails and the environments they run through. All trail magic should be manned, and nothing should be left in the wilderness at all. Ever. Though the motives of the people who leave caches is well-intended, the trail is being littered by caches like this, ruining the wilderness experience for others, putting trash in pristine environments, and providing wildlife with foods they should never have. They may be nice but are NOT necessary to hike the trail successfully.
