This post is dedicated to my friend Anne & her son Chris (in the photo) and to all individuals with Autism as well as the families who advocate on their behalf; never give up!!! To mark the first day of National/World Autism Awareness Month, on April 2nd 2014 the Empire State Building in NYC and other designated landmarks throughout the world will light up in blue. Throughout the country many events are held to mark the day as well. liub.autismspeaks.org/welcome?utm_source=lightitupblue.org&utm_medium=webpage&utm_content=sitemovedpage&utm_campaign=LIUB2014# Did you know that Autism dates back to the early 1900’s? In those days, it was believed that Autism was associated with a mental disorder, schizophrenia. Around the 1940’s it was determined Autism is a disorder in and of itself. Still, so little was known about the condition. Sadly, shock treatments were considered the normal form of treatment. Forty years later, Autism is finally out of the dark ages & onto the forefront! Children with Autism are now placed in specialized classrooms with adaptive learning materials and also receive supportive therapies to further address individual needs. Autism is a neurological disorder that currently affects 1 in 68 children in the US, 1 in 42 boys, & 1 in 189 girls. There are three disorders on the Autism Spectrum: Autistic Disorder (classic autism), Pervasive Developmental Disorder, not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger Syndrome. To date, there is no cure for Autism but it has been noted that an early diagnosis & intervention has proven to be beneficial in the lives of those it involves. For more information on Autism: autismspeaks.org/ Great strides have been made in efforts to educate and spread awareness. However, we still have a long way to go so, C’mon… get your blue on!
