This rainy weather has proved very productive for my yoga practice today (well, really because I finished all of Transparent season 1 in 2 days ). One of my New Year Intentions was to practice daily the tools and skills necessary to enable me to maybe one day make that transition from crow to handstand a reality:) Core strength is a must to skillfully travel through transitions and for every posture. One excellent way to really make yourself engage your core is by placing your feet on a blanket (if you have hardwood floors) or on paper plates (if you have a carpeted surface like me). Just by going through a regular Sun A Salute you will notice and become aware of how much core stability and strength is truly required. At the end I show the humpback from crow to chaturanga. Which is also really tough and requires upper body AND core strength. Practicing the actions and tools IS the process of yoga. Not the final version or pose. Its very hard to let go of the outcome or picture in my head of what I want certain postures to look like but the more I stay connected to my breath and stay present in my body, I find that I dont mind so much what the outcome is because Im enjoying the process so much more. I love what Jason Crandell said today during the YogaGlo class I took from him: The less you use your body to do a yoga pose and the more you use a yoga pose to understand how to live in your body the happier and more scalable your practice will be.
