This shot showing me walking upgrade on a branch off of the Luzerne Branch Main of the Au Sable & North Western 3 foot gauge line about 8 miles SE of Luzerne. This short off branch tackled three hills about 250 yards apart straight as an arrow and was about 1 mile or so in length. The grade up the first hill estimated about 4-6% and about the same down the other side. Second hill(shown in picture) I would say 8-10% minimum and about 6% down and up the third hill maybe about 6%. You can barely see me at the top in my safety green T Shirt near the cut at the top of hill 2. At bottom point between hills one and two you could stand and walk 10 feet in either direction and being going upgrade. Its the closest thing I have ever seen to a railroad roller coaster. Also shown is one of two DeWitt journal box covers I found on the Luzerne branch, patent dated June 19th, 1877. Wife Vickie and I have made 7 multi day trips to the AS&NW mapping this railroad from one end to other starting in AuSable since May. Already have 6 days working the Luzerne branch on the last two trips and still sorting branches! This short piece of track was astonishing, SHAY country for sure!
