This should stir up controversy... Ive seen some experts and I know the old timers always did it use salt and maybe a little oil to remove stuck food. Yikes, salt doesnt belong anywhere near cast iron or steel and will cause rust. Usually I find the rust underneath the old seasoning when I remove it. You can strip a black skillet that looks totally usable and find orange rust under it after your oven clean cycle removes the seasoning. I find it more logical to use just water and a scraper or water and soap but no salt. Okay, here come the replies!! lol (maybe the rust doesnt hurt anything and its just me....)
