This song confounds me — “Take Me To Church” by Hozier — - TopicsExpress

This song confounds me — “Take Me To Church” by Hozier — at first I hated it, and now I kind of like the hook, but overall I still think it’s a deeply damaged song. Yet it’s a big hit, judging from how often it plays on Live 105. It’s erratic, unconventional and avant-garde, and it ignores every rule of songwriting, starting with its lack of a recognizable melody. The song’s sole salvation is the hook, which is melodious yet inscrutable: “Take me to church, I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife, Offer me that deathless death, good God, let me give you my life.” This song is the precise opposite of recognizable rock ‘n’ roll tunes, say, “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which you can actually sing to yourself because it has structure, verse and chorus. “Take Me to Church” sounds to me like a song written by someone who doesn’t know how to write a song but likes to sing everything that comes to mind, no matter how atonal or unstructured or weird. Mark me down as a doubter that Hozier will ever be a household name. That’s my two cents, and you can keep the change. But by the way, this video has gotten close to 18 million hits. https://youtube/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw
