This song reminds me of Steel Pier... Atlantic Citys famous Steel Pier is the centerpiece of family entertainment on the great wooden way. Originally opened in 1898, Steel Pier quickly became known for showcasing the worlds top entertainers, delighting thousands of visitors each day with top names and novelty acts. Today, kids of all ages enjoy the amusements, thrill rides and games of chance on Steel Pier. The Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was a mile-long structure that got its name from its steel underpinnings, the rest being largely made of wood. For many years it was home to a variety of entertainments for the holidaymakers who descended on the resort, as well as for the local population. Opened in 1898 with cowgirl Annie Oakley as the star attraction, the Steel Pier was known as The Showplace of the Nation, featuring an amusement park with high-diving horses, water-skiing dogs and human cannonballs, exhibits and sideshows. It was used as a venue for live music, and also played host to the Miss America pageant. Acts who performed on the Steel Pier over the years included everyone from Al Jolson, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra to the Rolling Stones and Smokey Robinson. Jazz bands of the swing era also featured regularly. In 1958 Ed Hurst originated the Summertime on the Pier show, a live two-hour television broadcast from the Marine Ballroom at the end of the Steel Pier, and from 1960 it aired every Saturday and Sunday in the summer months, drawing large audiences from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Ed Hurst was a native of Atlantic City who originally found fame as a disc jockey on radio station WPEN Philadelphia in the 1950s, where his 950 Club with Joe Grady was both an innovation and a huge success.
