This story ties to two other stories, both appearances of the Mother of Jesus that you should look up. The story of the appearance of Our Lady to an Aztec peasant has many hard-to-believe features that blow the mind. Yet, his tilma, a peasant garment which should have rotted away in ten years with its miraculous image is still hanging in the basilica almost 500 years later. The Blessed Mother also appeared to several teenagers in Medjugore, Croatia , beginning in the early 1980s. It has also become a place of pilgrimage. Surprisingly, it completely escaped any damage during the horrible war in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, although it is right in the middle of the region in which the worst atrocities were committed. Note, the Catholic Church has not yet made any pronouncement on the authenticity of the Medjugore appearances, but will wait to make a determination when the last person who allegedly witnessed the apparition is dead. It has verified the accuracy of the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In fact, we celebrated her feast Friday and the feast of the peasant St. Juan Diego on Tuesday last. (December 12 and 9, respectively).
