The contrast with an ordinary indictment is truly remarkable. To believe that a grand jury could come to this conclusion based on the very facts laid out in the prosecutors statement, decide those facts are insufficient to establish that there was probable cause that a crime was committed, and come to that conclusion based on the facts alone, is misguided at best. The jurors interpreted the facts presented to them through a lens that devalues the lives of poor black victims, discredits the testimony of poor black witnesses, and places blind trust in law enforcement to always do what is right. This is a crisis. The turmoil in communities across the country only goes to show that the damage that these assumptions have caused is real and deeply felt.
