This video depicts a few of the many hazards & dangers that Firefighters are exposed to every day. In my 40+ years experience as a Firefighter, Commander, Trainer & Consultant, I have found that the majority of accidents involving Firefighters whilst responding to emergency incidents are NOT caused by “Freak” accidents. Most are caused by: 1. Inappropriate use, improper or lack of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) 2. Inappropriate use of equipment 3. Failure to adhere to “Safe Working Practices” 4. Unjustifiable, High-Risk, “Offensive” strategies being adopted without any obvious potential gain 5. “Tunnel Vision” – Failing to see the hazards around them 6. Over-familiarity with common practices – “We do this every day” 7. Wanting to be a Hero - Every day Where there is no possibility of saving lives or protecting property there should be no activities undertaken that expose Emergency Responders to any risk at all The risk to Responders should be the MOST IMPORTANT factor considered by the Incident Commander when determining the strategy that will be adopted It’s YOUR Safety It’s YOUR Life Use it - - - Or Loose it
