This video inspired me to keep up the fight. I have never posted about my last year and a half with the Red Earth Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program through OCU. I was accepted into the program around the same time I was diagnosed with cancer--the same month if I remember correctly. I had to immediately make a decision. Of course, TW said to do it. He believed in me. After talking with the program director, Jeanetta Calhoun Mish, I determined I would give it my best shot. This has been the most difficult thing I have ever done. Mainly because I have wanted it so badly and there have been so many obstacles, so many reasons to give up, and so many times I have wanted to quit. Its no easy feat trying to read and write while under the influence of pain medication, actual pain, surgeries, and new medication that my body and mind have had to adjust to in the last year. There have been times when I could not focus on longer works, and had zero creativity. I wrote to my professor with tears in my eyes, I feel like I am hanging on by my fingernails. I have wanted it so badly, to earn my degree, but my mind was no longer cooperating like normal. His response was, You may be holding on by your fingernails, but know weve got you by your wrists. Lou Berney, youll never know how much that meant to me at that moment. I am happy to report things have gotten better, and I am so grateful to my Red Earth family. It means so much to know that there are people who care enough to cheer you to the finish line and catch you when you fall. Btw the pressure of writing something this long and tagging a bunch of writers, some which are professional...yeah.
